Dr. Marisa Verwys
Hello my name is Dr. Verwys and I am very excited about joining the Kentwood Cat Clinic and moving back to Michigan to be closer to family and friends. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself; I am originally from Southern California where I grew up with many cats and a family dog.
I moved to Michigan after college to attend Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. I enjoyed my four years in East Lansing and finally to get to see some real seasons that I was deprived of growing in up in Southern California. After graduation I moved to Florida where I spent eight wonderful years at a small animal practice and started a family as well. As much as I enjoyed living in Florida the pull of family and friends was stronger and my husband and I moved back to Michigan.
We have a full household with two children, three dogs and three cats. We love to spend time outdoors being active and traveling as a family. My husband and I are looking forward to raising our children here in Grand Rapids and I am planning on many wonderful years here at Kentwood Cat Clinic.
Dr. Miranda Boomstra
Dr. Miranda Boomstra grew up in West Michigan and attended veterinary school at Michigan State University. She started out working with both horses and companion animals, but is very excited to be working in feline medicine now. Veterinary medicine is a second career for her, as she has spent 14 years as a massage therapist and still owns a massage therapy business. Developing relationships with both human and furry clients and helping both to feel healthier is the best part of her jobs. She has 4 cat-kids: Corky, Kerry, Squeaker, and Toes. Dr. Boomstra and her husband love to travel and renovate their home in their spare time.
Dr. Kirsten Begin
Dr. Kirsten Begin is a Michigan native who went to Michigan State University for both undergraduate studies as well as veterinary school. After graduation she spent a year at Mississippi State University completing a rotating internship then a year at the Animal Specialty and Emergency Center in Los Angeles, California completing a surgical internship. Upon returning to Michigan, Dr. Begin started practicing as a relief veterinarian where she gets to travel to a variety of different clinics and meet new people and their pets. Currently she splits her time between working at the cat clinics and traveling as a relief doctor. Dr. Begin shares her home with her cat, Linus.
I grew up in Grand Rapids. Currently I'm married, have 4 children and 7 grand-kids... 2 of which live in Oregon. I like doing crafts, reading and spending time with my family. I have had a great love of animals all my life, especially cats! I have worked for the Kentwood Cat Clinic for over 20 years!
When I was first offered an opportunity to work for the Kentwood Cat Clinic I thought it might be boring working with only cats. Let me tell you, there has NEVER been a boring day in the 17 + years I’ve been a part of the Kentwood Cat Clinic family. Over the years our doctors have helped me gain a world of knowledge about kitties and kitty care. I currently have 2 cats of my own. Mooshu 15 yrs, & Boo 16 yrs. What I appreciate the most about cats is their distinct personalities. My favorite thing about them is when they sing me to sleep.
Marla has been at the front desk of Kentwood Cat Clinic for over 10 years after a lifetime of being owned by a number of pets. She had a number of years in "human" medicine before moving to the veterinary side. She enjoys the interaction with the clients and their cats. She has one cat at home, Rory.
Kari graduated in 2000 from GVSU with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Her life wouldn’t be complete without being surrounded by cats, so in 2005, she combined her love of nursing and animals by graduating from MSU with a degree in Veterinary Technology. Being both a registered nurse and a Licensed Veterinary Technician for her is “the best of both worlds”.
Kari met a fellow animal lover and coworker, Chris, here at the Cat Clinic. In August of 2014 they were married and were proud to have Harvey, one of the clinic cats, be their honorary groomsman. Together they have four crazy cats; Autumn, Darianna, Mia, and Mister. In 2016 they welcomed a son, Jax, into their family!
I have been working in veterinary clinics on and off since 1987. I have been a receptionist, kennel person, veterinary assistant, and dog walker. I was licensed as a veterinary technician through Michigan State in September of 1996 and have been with Kentwood Cat Clinic since December of 1997.
Currently, I supervise 2 cats and 5 ferrets. Zahra is my senior girl at 15 years. She has survived mammary adenocarcinoma, which is usually fatal within 1 year of diagnosis. She has passed the 3 year anniversary. Butterfly is my youngest at 13 years, she only likes human contact on her terms. Both girls excel at dental disease and have had most of their teeth removed due to cavities or fractures. I have had cats since 1989.
The ferrets are middle aged to elderly. They terrorize the cats as much as they are able. They sleep about 23 hours a day at their age and are caged when I can't supervise. I have had ferrets since 1995.
Dorene graduated from Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine Technician program in 1998. She started working with the Kentwood Cat Clinic & Cat Clinic North in June of 1999. She is married to Mike, and they have two children, Mandy & Tyler. They also have 1 cat, Sayuri, and a dog, Emma. In her free time, Dorene likes to read, watch movies, and take nature walks – preferably in good weather! She loves to visit different zoos and aquariums, and has always loved cats (especially the Tigers!) A couple times a month, Dorene attends/co-leads a women’s Bible study small group with Ada Bible Church.
Sarah is a long time cat lover and Licensed Veterinary Technician. She grew up on a farm in Zeeland Michigan. She graduated from Sanford Brown College in 2012 with a degree in Veterinary Technology. Today she still resides in the Zeeland area with her husband, their daughter, Carly, and 1 dog, 3 cats, and 2 horses.
I have been a pet-owner/participant almost my entire life. It took me a while to find my career, but animals have always been a passion of mine and I have always been a cat person.
My wife, Amanda, and I currently have three. Ashran and Cinder we adopted about 4 years ago from the Humane Society, and Bella is a recent adoption obtained from some friends of ours who had no choice but to give her up.
I started working at the Cat Clinics back in June of 2014, shortly after graduating Magna Cum Laude from Baker College of Muskegon and becoming a Licensed Veterinary Technician.
Crystal started her career here as an extern for the veterinary technician program at Baker College of Muskegon in 2010, and after graduation was hired on to join our staff. She has four cats and a lovebird. She loves reading and being outdoors.

Mary has been a member of the Cat Clinic family since the summer of 2006, and she has always had a love of cats. She feels that their personality is similar to hers helping her to connect and bond with the different patients that visit the clinic. She enjoys the challenge of constantly learning and puts that to good use at the Cat Clinics by mastering her job, and then going on to continually learn new processes and take on additional responsibility. With over 10 years of experience, she plays an important role in the clinic by lending her expertise to help with many aspects of daily operations, staffing, and project management. She and her husband have two kids at home and two cats in their family, currently.
Ashley graduated in 2009 from the University of Michigan with a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology & 2013 from Grand Valley State University with a Masters in Social Work. In addition to working at the cat clinic, she works as a therapist at an eating disorder clinic. During her free time, she enjoys reading, spending time outside, traveling, & of course, loving on kitties! She has four cats of her own.
Chelsea is a long time animal lover who discovered that working with them is her passion. She has learned a lot since becoming a veterinary assistant at the cat clinics and is excited to keep acquiring new skills. She stays busy at home as fur-parent to her dog, Malakai, and kitty cats, Bonnie, Gretchen, and President Teeny Toes. When she's not working, Chelsea enjoys art, cooking (and eating), and spending time with her parents and seven crazy siblings.
Chris joined the cat clinic family in 2007 and is known as the cat whisperer. Over the years he has formed a special bond with Harvey, one of the clinic cats. Chris has even trained Harvey to give kisses, hive fives, open his own locker, and much much more. Harvey is so special to Chris, that he had Harvey be an honorary groomsman at his wedding.
Along with his passion for animals, Chris loves anything Star Trek, and enjoys adding to his extensive Star Trek collection.
Chris is married to Kari (whom he met while working together at the Cat Clinic) and they have 1 son, Jax, and several cats.
I started at the cat clinics in May of 2000. I love all animals, but have always had a deeper appreciation for cats. Working at the cat clinics has only fueled my passion for felines! I am married and have 3 cats and 2 dogs. Outside of work, I enjoy flower gardening and caring for far too many house plants.
I was born in Grand Rapids, and although I've lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, & upstate New York, GR will always be my home. I have a BS in Zoology from MSU, and I've worked with animals for over 6 years now. I'm attending Baker College of Muskegon to become a licensed veterinary technician. I have two cats of my own, and in my spare time I love to read, write, & watch movies.
Hi, my name is Lauren. I'm from Grand Rapids, MI. Most of my past jobs have been retail or other types of work, and I was really looking to do more and make a difference. I have loved animals my whole life, and though my career so far has not been centered around working with them, I have finally found a niche for myself as a veterinary assistant. I had some dogs earlier in my life and while that sadly did not work out, I have had my own Kitty for almost 16 years now. My appreciation and love extends to all animals, but I find cats to be very special and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of this great, feline-loving team!
Hello fellow cat lovers. My name is Carleigh, and I am currently a college student at Michigan State University pursuing further education in Veterinary Medicine. The Cat Clinic North has awesome Veterinarians and staff, they are great mentors, and have helped me gain the experience needed to pursue a life long career in Veterinary Medicine. When I am not working, you can find me studying, hanging out with friends, or at the barn riding and learning how to train horses. I also love spending time with my cat, Kawai!
My name is Becky and I have a cat named Gary, and a big old Newfoundland named Bell. I started working at the Cat Clinic in February of 2017 and I am so excited to be a part of such a great team of animal lovers! I've always wanted a job helping animals and I dream of one day having a career doing wild animal rehabilitation.
For as long as I can remember, my dream has been to work with animals. I grew up in a household of dog lovers, but discovered my passion for kitties after adopting my first cat, Myra, when I was 16. My husband and I have been together since 2014 and welcomed our son, Aiden, in 2015. We recently rescued our newest addition, a kitten named Louie. Working at the Cat Clinics has been an amazing experience. I love being able to meet new clients and their fur babies every day. I am currently studying at Penn Foster College to become a Licensed Veterinary Technician.

My name is Stacey and I have been tumbling through life looking for my niche. Lucky for me, as soon as I began working for Kentwood Cat Clinic I found it. I have always been an animal lover and have found that working with them on a daily basis makes a mundane life infinitely better. In my spare time I like to binge watch Disney movies and spend as much time with my friends and family as I can.
Hannah recently graduated from the University of California Davis in 2017 with a degree in biology before moving back home to Ada, MI. She worked as an educator at a zoo over the summer before joining the Cat Clinic team in November 2017. She has worked with a variety of animals from livestock to wildlife and wanted to explore the feline side of animal care. Hannah has had pets all her life and her family currently has two dogs, a chinchilla, a tortoise, and (of course) one cat.
